Kodak Stereo Camera: il 3d ai tempi del View-Master.

 

Ho sempre avuto una cotta insana per il View – Master, quell’affare che ci attaccavi gli occhi e ti faceva vedere le immaginine dei posti lontani come fossero state li dentro.
All’epoca ero un bambino e mi limitavo a guardarci dentro…

Since I was a child I had an insane infatuation for the View-Master, it showed me faraway places like they were inside it.
I was only a child and I loved only to put my eyes on it….

Qualche anno più tardi ho iniziato ad indagare su ciò che accadeva dentro quell’aggeggio di bakelite ed ho scoperto che simulare l’effetto treddì in fotografia è cosa abbastanza semplice: bisogna fotografare quello che gli occhi vedono, come loro lo vedono.

Some year later I began to investigate on the process that take place inside this bakelite object, and I discovered that the “3-D effect” is not so hard to obtain in photography: you have to photograph what the eyes see, just like they see it.

Ecco perchè quella che vedete in queste immagini è una splendida Kodak Stereo superdotata, con due occhi.
Essendo la distanza tra gli obiettivi grossomodo la stessa che c’è tra i nostri bulbi oculari, circa 6 cm,  si ottengono due scatti simili ma non uguali: ogni scatto ha una prospettiva leggermente diversa.

Provate a chiudere un occhio alla volta e capirete che la stessa cosa accade:  avete la stessa visuale con una prospettiva di poco sfasata.
In questo esperimento gli oggetti più vicini saranno quelli che risultano più scostati, mentre quelli lontani avranno la stessa posizione, sia che li guardiate con l’occhio destro che con l’occhio sinistro.

That’s why you are admiring this enhanced beautiful Kodak Stereo, with two “eyes”.
The distance between the lenses is more or less the same among our eyeballs, almost 2.4 in, so we’ll obtain two similar but not equal shoots: every picture has it’s own perspective, a little bit different from the other. 

If you try to close one eye at a time maybe you’ll understand better what I mean: you will see the same things with two differents perspectives.
In this experiment the objects near you will be more shifted conversely the far objects will be in the same place even if you look with the left eye or with the right eye.

La Kodak Stereo Camera è stramba ma dissimula la sua difformità nel classico design degli anni ’50. I controlli sono quelli di una spartana fotocamera manuale:  tempi e diaframmi sulla parte superiore del corpo e messa a fuoco sugli obiettivi…che ovviamente ruotano insieme!

The Kodak Stereo Camera is weird but disguises it’s dissimilarity in the classic 50’s design. We can easily recognize the controls of a manual camera: shutter times and iris on the top of the body and the focus ring is on both the lenses…that obviously rotates together! 

L’incavo frontale del mirino ospita una  mini-livella a bolla, serve per aiutarvi ad ottenere un’immagine orizzontale…e si vede anche dal mirino!
Il contapose è anch’esso sulla parte superiore, ma dietro rispetto ai diaframmi, insieme all’indicatore della pellicola Kodachrome e ai rocchetti “wind” e “rewind”.

In front of the camera you can see a small spirit lever that helps you to get horizontal  photos…and it’s visible even from the viewfinder!
The film counter it’s in the top, behind the iris controls, and near the film type indicator. The wind and rewind knobs are also on the top.

 

Prima di acquistare questa fotocamera avevo adocchiato la View-Master camera  (ce ne sono un paio di versioni, sembrano veramente splendide ma costano!) e la Realist Stereo.
La seconda, a quanto mi è parso di capire, ha spopolato in quegli anni tanto da diventare uno standard per la stereofotografia.

Questa Kodak è spudoratamente copiata dalla Realist ma in qualche modo perfezionata.

Before this purchase I was considering the beautifull View-Master Camera (there are a couple of versions, but they’re a bit expensive!) and the Realist Stero.
The Realist was so popular in the 50’s, and became a standard in stereophotography.

This Kodak is quite a copy of the Realist, with some improvements.

Dopo lo scatto e dopo lo sviluppo, la diapositiva deve essere tagliata. Scoprirete che sulla pellicola ci sono una trentina di “coppie” sfasate tra loro. Santa pazienza.
Santa.

Nel caso della View-Master Camera per tagliare la pellicola ci sono degli aggeggi da cui si ottengono dei quadratini. Quadratini che poi vanno  montati nei classici dischi, quasi introvabili se non a prezzi assurdi con spedizioni dall’America.

After the shoot and after the develop, the film has to be cutted. You’ll discover that on these positives there are more than 30 couples that you’ll have to match togheter. Enjoy!

The View-Master has an official “cutter machine” that must be used to obtain the chips to mount on the reels. Reels that today are rare and expensive, even if made of heavy paper!

Il sistema Realist (adottato anche dalla Kodak) era più umano, bastavano un paio di forbici e dei mascherini come questi.
Un piccolo visore in plastica e il gioco è fatto.

The Realist system (used also for Kodak cameras) is more kindly, all you need are scissors and masks like these.
A little plastic viewer and that’s it.

Al secondo rullino ho scoperto di avere dei fasci indesiderati di luce inderiderata in quasi tutti gli scatti, uno bianco e uno rosso disturbano un pò la visione. D’altronde gli anni passano per tutti…
Per chi di voi a casa avesse degli occhialini rosso-blu ho creato questi anaglifi, sono delle elaborazioni che permettono di sovrapporre i due scatti mantenendo l’effetto stereo.

With my second roll I discovered some light leaks in almost every frame, a white one and a red one, that thwart the 3-D vision. This camera is getting older…
For those who have red-cyan glasses, here I made some anaglyphs (the pictures are overlayed to obtain a stereo effect).
