Berlino, bottino di guerra n°2: VEB Rheinmetall Perfekta

Anche la seconda fotocamera tedesca arriva dal Flohmarkt Arkonaplatz, un mercatino dell’usato non lontano dal più grande e conosciuto Flohmarkt im Mauerpark. Acquisto solo prodotti tipici del territorio ma a differenza dell’Agfa Box 45 prodotta nella Germania nazista la Rheinmetall Perfekta arriva dalla Germania dell’est o DDR.

This is the second camera I bought at the Flohmarkt Arkonaplatz, a less known flea market near the larger Flohmarkt im Mauerpark in Berlin. I always go with local products and after the  Agfa Box 45 produced in the nazi Germany I choosed a DDR one built by Rheinmetall: the Perfekta .

Mi ha incuriosito da subito per il suo design particolare e in qualche modo legato ancora allo Streamlining . Per essere una medio formato si tratta di una fotocamera piccola ed estremamente leggera, merito indiscusso del corpo in bakelite. È completamente nera, con dei dettagli color crema (il pulsante di scatto, gli agganci per la tracolla e le due ghiere di regolazione) che la rendono ancora più interessante.

I was intrigued by its peculiar design connected somehow to Streamiling.
It’s a medium format camera but it’s extremely small and light thanks to its bakelite body. As you can see from these pictures it’s completely black with few cream finish (the shutter release button, the diaphragm and the shutter speed rings and other details) that makes the device even more interesting.

Non ha un mirino vero e proprio, bisogna quindi adattarsi al cosiddetto “mirino sportivo” apribile che si trova sulla parte superiore del corpo.
La pellicola medio formato va caricata al contrario, a destra, perchè il rocchetto di avanzamento è a sinistra.

The viewfinder (as we know it) is missing and we have to guess the framing from the sportsfinder built on the top, which I hate.
You have to load the film on the other side because the winding knob is on your left.

Le stranezze finiscono qui, per il resto è una fotocamera scura (f 7,7 – f11 – f16 e basta) con la possibilità di settare l’otturatore solamente in modalità istantanea “M” o posa “B”. Sul dorso c’è a classica finestrella per controllare la numerazione della pellicola e quindi il totale degli scatti.

Unusual solutions ends here, you have a quite dark/slow camera (only f 7,7 – f11 and f16) with only two exposure time options: M and B (M is for “instant”). On the back there’s the classic little red window to control the poses count written on the back of the 120mm film.  

Ho avuto qualche problema nell’usarla e non mi ha impressionato molto a parte per la sua leggerezza e per l’ingombro minimo.
Essendo una fotocamera a basso costo non ha molte accortezze, tra cui la messa a fuoco. Bisogna quindi lavorare di iperfocale e chiudere il diaframma per avere maggiore profondità di campo.

I had some difficulties while shooting with it and it didn’t impressed me much. Its main qualities remains lightness and size.
It was designed as a cheap camera and for this reason you can’t focus because it has fixed lenses. The answer to this problem maybe hyperfocal distance and close the diaphragm to maximize the depth of field.

La qualità delle immagini ovviamente non è il massimo, poca nitidezza e tutto un po’ impastato. Perfetta per la lomografia. In conclusione: bella da vedere e da avere, ma non credo che ci metterò dentro un altro rullino.

Image quality is poor, no sharpness and blurriness are its main features. Perfect for lomography. My conclusion is: a beautiful camera but I don’t think I’ll put another roll in it.

Berlino, bottino di guerra n°1: Agfa Box 45

Ho fatto un po’ come i Russi dopo la seconda guerra mondiale: loro portarono via intere industrie di apparecchi fotografici, io ho portato via un paio di fotocamere (in realtà senza dichiarare guerra a nessuno) e questa è la prima.
Si chiama Agfa Box 45 ed è la mia prima box-camera.

Inspired by the Russians after WWII, I took two cameras in Berlin. 
Ok, they took some photographic factory and captured some technician and I didn’t declare war to someone but that’s another story.
This is the Agfa Box 45 and it’s my first box-camera. 

Questa tipologia di apparecchi deve il suo nome alla forma elementare “a scatola”. Si diffusero maggiormente tra fine ‘800 e inizio ‘900, grazie a Kodak che puntava, come al solito, ad un prodotto per le masse. Al grido di “you press the button, we do the rest” fu commercializzata una scatola pre-caricata che, una volta esauriti gli scatti, veniva restituita al fotografo di zona. Lui spediva il pacco a Rochester, NY dove la Kodak sviluppava, stampava e restituiva la fotocamera carica.

The name it’s obviously related to it’s design. 
These cameras became popular between the 19th and the 20th century, thanks to Kodak and its will to produce a low cost photographic device for the masses.
“You press the button, we do the rest” was the slogan and that was accurate: once the roll finished you had to return the entire camera to the shop, they sent it back to Rochester NY were Kodak developed the roll, printed the photos, and loaded back the device.

Questo però non è un modello Kodak, si tratta di un esemplare Agfa ed è un modello piuttosto tardivo tra le box camera.
Venne prodotto dal 1940 nell’allora germania nazista, è essenziale e spartano ma ha un paio di accortezze particolari.

That in the picture is not a Kodak camera, it’s an Agfa and it’s quite a late model among box-cameras.
Agfa produced it starting from 1940 in the Nazi-Germany, it’s a basic product but has some interesting features.

Una sicuramente è il filtro giallo incorporato, che si può inserire tramite la linguetta metallica sporgente che gestisce il diaframma. Dimenticate il classico diaframma a lamelle che magari tende ad incepparsi, qui si tratta di far scorrere la linguetta su cui sono i tre fori: grande, piccolo e grande con filtro giallo.

The camera is equiped with a yellow filter, you can add it using the diaphragm metallic flap. Forget our beloved iris diaphragm, on our flap you switch between a narrow hole, a wide hole and a wide hole + yellow filter.  That’s all you can do.

L’altra accortezza, che in realtà è abbastanza comune tra le box camera, è il doppio mirino per l’inquadratura in verticale e in orizzontale. Questo giustifica i due “occhi” sopra la lente.
Il tempo di scatto si seleziona con una piccola leva (sopra la linguetta del diaframma), abbiamo due opzioni: puntino o linea. Puntino scatto breve (credo 1/100), linea posa B.
Una volta finito il rullino si riavvolge con il pomello che sporge sul fianco.

The other feature is not so hard to find in box cameras: the double viewfinder allows you to frame the scene when you’re in portrait mode or in landscape mode. Tha’t why the camera has two eyes up in the frontal panel.
The shutter speed chan be selected with a lever above the diaphragm flap and we can switch between a line and a dot. The dot means “regular shoot” (I think 1/100), the line means exposure B.
When the roll is over you can rewind with the rewinding knob on the right side of the device.

A parte il fatto che usa pellicola medio formato 120 e che produce immagini 6×9 non rimane molto da dire.
Posso aggiungere che è difficilissima da aprire, in pratica bisogna sbloccare il dorso che è interamente in metallo ed ha due piccole sporgenze in alto che lo tengono chiuso.
Una volta aperta il più è fatto, basta estrarre il telaietto interno e caricarla.

The camera uses 120 medium format rolls and produces 6×9 cm photos.
There’s not so much to talk about.
I can add that it’s really difficult to open, you have to unlock the back side and there are two little bumps on the top that keep it closed.
Once you succeed you can pull out the chassis and load the film.

La qualità delle immagini non è affatto male. Non dimentichiamo che  produce dei negativi enormi, non proprio nitidissimi ma utilizzabili.
Bisogna ricordarsi dei limiti dell’apparecchio quindi è preferibile scattare con molta luce e ricordarsi che la messa a fuoco è una sconosciuta.

Image quality is not that bad. Don’t forget that this camera produces big negatives, not so sharp but useful.
We know that this is a basic device so, as the majority of them, it’s better to use on sunny days. 

 

 

Kraut Rollei

Ecco la seconda parte di Berlino, quella analogica. Questa era la prima parte, digitale.
Dopo Budapest, San Pietroburgo e Cannes la Rolleiflex T è volata a Berlino nel 2017: una trasferta non da poco per una fotocamera che ha più di mezzo secolo di vita.

This is another side of Berlin  the analog one, that one was the digital side instead.
After Budapest, Saint Petersburg and Cannes, this year the Rolleiflex T has flown to Berlin. Not bad for a more-than-50 years old camera.

Gran parte del tempo l’ho passato in bici e questo complicava le cose, l’ho usata quindi in situazioni più comode come a Volkspark Friedrichshain o Charlottenburg (foto sopra).  Non sono soddisfatto delle foto fatte a Berlino Est, la zona che mi ha affascinato maggiormente, evidentemente questo modello Rollei non ha simpatie bolsceviche.

I spent most of the time wandering around with a bike so I used this camera only in few places. Places where you can relax yourself and take a moment to shoot, like Volkspark Friedrichshain or Charlottenburg. I’m not satisfied with the photos I took in the east side of Berlin, I was literally captured by this part of the city but the Rollei didn’t. Maybe this model doesn’t likes bolsheviks.

Ho scattato tutto su Ilford HP5+ ed una volta tornato in patria ho sviluppato i 3 rulli nel Paranol S.

I took all this photos on Ilford HP5+ and when I came back home I developed all the film in Paranol S.
