Holga, mi sei mancata.

Ho scoperto che nei nove anni di attività di questo blog ho pubblicato solo un post contenente fotografie scattate con la Holga.
Molto strano.
L’ho comprata nel 2007 e nel corso degli anni l’ho usata parecchio anche per sperimentare soluzioni “fai da te”.
Ho anche dimenticato di fare la sua recensione obsoleta, che mancanza. Rimedierò.

I just discovered that in nine years I published only one post with Holga photos on this blog.
And this is really strange.
I bought this camera in 2007 and I used it a lot, also to experiment with some “do it yourself” solution.
This blog also misses a review about this camera, I’m sorry. I will plan it now.

È sempre un piacere usarla, anche le aspettative sono diametralmente opposte rispetto alla qualità Rolleiflex da me tanto decantata. Qui la plastica regna sovrana e restituisce scatti sognanti, con vignettato drammatico e sfocatura nelle zone periferiche dell’immagine.

I really love using this camera, even if the feeling is totally different from my beloved Rolleiflex.
Here it’s all about plastic and the photographic results are dreamy, with a dramatic vignette and periferic blur.

In pellegrinaggio alla LOMO

Due anni fa tornato da San Pietroburgo ho scoperto che avevo mancato un obiettivo clamoroso: la fabbrica LOMO.
Per anni non avevo collegato che si trattava dell’acronimo di “Leningradskoye Optiko-Mekhanicheskoye Obyedinenie” ossia  qualcosa come “associazione ottico-meccanica di Leningrado”, da qui la mia mancanza.

Two years ago I came back from a trip to Saint Petersburg and I realized that I missed a fundamental point of interest: the LOMO factory.
For years I ignored that LOMO means “Leningradskoye Optiko-Mekhanicheskoye Obyedinenie” (Leningrad Optics & Mechanics Amalgamation) and that was  the problem.

Oggi nel ridente stabilimento in Chugunnaya Ulitsa si continuano a produrre microscopi, telescopi e apparecchiature mediche.
Non mi è molto chiaro quanto oggi la LOMO russa sia imparentata con la Lomographische AG austriaca che detiene il marchio “Lomography”. Fino a ieri avrei detto che non avevano niente a che spartire, ma ho poi scoperto il fantastico sito in flash lomo.ru. Qualche relazione con la “Lomography entertainment” deve esserci visto che nella home c’è anche il link a lomography.com.

Today in Chugunnaya Ulitsa the factory produces microscopes, telescopes and medical devices.
It’s not clear to me how russian LOMO is related to austrian Lomographische AG (who owns the “Lomography” trademark). I always thought that was only a name-tribute to the camera maker, but than I discovered the fabulous flash website lomo.ru and there’s a link in the homepage wich points to lomography.com. 

Dal 1995 fino al 2005 qui era ripartita la produzione della LC-A, grazie a delle negoziazioni con l’allora vice-governatore di San Pietroburgo Vladimir Putin.
La grande richiesta registrata a partire dal ’91 era dovuta a due studenti austriaci che, ispirati da questa fotocamera, crearono il movimento oggi conosciuto come “Lomography”.

From 1995 until 2005 this factory re-started LC-A camera production after negotiations with the vice-mayor of Saint Petersburg Vladimir Putin.
Requests for this camera were growing since 1991, after the founding of the “Lomography” movement made by two austrian students fascinated by LC-A.

Fondata nel 1914 nell’allora Pietrogrado, con non so quale nome, venne riorganizzata diverse volte e divenne anche GOMZ “Gosularstvennyi Optiko-Mekhanicheskii Zavod” (azienda ottico-meccanica statale) nel ’32.
Negli anni sovietici è stata una delle aziende più importanti e segrete dell’unione ed è arrivata ad impiegare fino a 30.000 lavoratori. Ha collezionato nella sua storia tre “ordini di Lenin” che ora campeggiano sopra l’ingresso della fabbrica.

The factory was founded in Petrograd in 1914 – I couldn’t find the original name – and was reorganized several times. His name even changed to GOMZ “Gosularstvennyi Optiko-Mekhanicheskii Zavod” (State Optical and Mechanical Factory) in 1932.
In the sovietic era was one of the largest and most secret company of the Union and employed over 30.000 workers. In his history LOMO collected three Orders of Lenin, now visible above the main entrance of the building.

A parte la LC-A, LOMO ha prodotto negli anni apparecchi “pop” notevoli come la Lubitel e la Chmena.  Caratteristiche principali: essenzialità, resistenza e basso costo di produzione.
Ho potuto solo passeggiare intorno l’edificio, sapevo anche di un piccolo negozietto con microscopi e rimanenze che però non sono riuscito a trovare.

A lot of russian “pop” camera were produced here, like Lubitel or Chmena. Typical of these devices are simplicity, solidness and low-cost production.
I just walked around the factory, I remember I heard rumors about a little shop with few microscopes and unsold stock but I couldn’t find it.
Maybe next time I’ll be more lucky.

Una Beirette nuova di pacca

La penultima volta che sono stato a porta Portese ho trovato un banchetto con delle stupende scatole blu: l’imballo era perfetto con tanto di plastica trasparente che iniziava a cedere al tempo.
In pratica il tizio stava vendendo alcuni esemplari ancora inscatolati di Beirette VSN a 15€.

I went to Porta Portese market again and I found a stand which was selling some blu boxes. Mint packages with perfect plastic envelops, only a little aged: these were “brand new” Beirette VSN, sold for 15€.

Incuriosito dalle circostanze ne ho comprata una e tornato a casa ho trovato dentro: custodia rigida, tracolla, gancio per il polso, istruzioni ma soprattutto garanzia italiana fino a settembre 1990!
Chissà se settembre è incluso o meno.

I was really curious and I bought one. Inside the box I found: a case, a shoulder strap, a hand strap, instructions and last but not least a full warranty effective until september 1990!
I wonder if september is included or not.

La fotocamera in sé è veramente piccola, ultraleggera ma non da affatto l’idea di essere fragile. Il corpo è in plastica e alluminio.
La casa produttrice non è molto nota, si tratta della Beier, per l’esattezza la “Kamera-Fabrik Woldemar Beier” poi ribattezzata in “VEB Kamerafabrik Freital” nel ’79 (credo sia il motivo di quella sigla KF sulla scatola).
Prodotto nell’allora DDR dagli anni ’70 fino ai ’90, si tratta di un modello particolarmente riuscito.

This is a really small camera, it’s lightweight but it doesn’t seem to be fragile. Its body is made of plastic and aluminium.
The company which built it is the not well known Beier, to be more precise its name was “Kamera-Fabrik Woldemar Beier” and was later renamed as “VEB Kamerafabrik Freital” (I think that is the real meaning of the KF logo on the box).
This camera was produced in the so-called DDR from the ’70s until the early ’90s: this was a successful product.

Completamente manuale, ovviamente sprovvista di esposimetro, ha i fantastici “segni meteo” per regolare l’apertura del diaframma e si va dal “sole pieno” =  f22 a “nuvoletta nera” = 2,8.
Si regola tutto nella zona del gruppo ottico, anche i tempi di scatto che sono riportati sulla stessa ghiera dei valori DIN/ASA. In questo caso si va da 1/125 a 1/30 + posa B.

It’s a completely manual camera and of course there’s no lightmeter in it. There are some “weather symbols” that indicate the diaphragm values: “sun” means f=22 and “black cloud” means f=2,8.
You can change all the settings near the optics, the shutter time values are on the same ring where the DIN/ASA values are. You can set the time from 1/125 to 1/30 + bulb.

La messa a fuoco va da 0,6 metri a infinito.
Una  fotocamera completa insomma, ha anche l’attacco per il flash! La particolarità è forse nel pulsante di scatto che è nella parte frontale mentre sotto, oltre la bellissima scritta DDR, c’è il pulsante di rilascio per riavvolgere il rullino.

You can focus from 0,6 meters to infinity.
A full-optional camera we could say, it also has a hot shoe for the flash!
The shutter release button is in front of the camera, near the lens. On the base of it there’s a DDR embossed sign and the release-rewind knob.

Ecco tre scatti dal primo rullino, i colori sono quelli di una Perutz Primera 100 scaduta da qualche anno. Non è eccelsa in quanto a nitidezza ma è ottima per scattare foto in giro senza pensare (vedi lomografia).

Here are some examples from my first roll with this camera.  These colors came out from an expired Perutz Primera 100. If you’re looking for sharpness this is not your camera but if you want to take pictures without thinking too much just buy it (if you can find one).
