Un pezzo Art Déco: Beau Brownie Kodak

Quella che state vedendo è la fotocamera più vecchia della mia collezione, per ora.
Mi è stata regalata lo scorso anno, una “box camera”, la seconda di questo tipo che mi capita tra le mani.
La particolarità sta tutta nella decorazione della parte frontale: un esempio di Art Déco che ci riporta agli anni ’30.

This is the oldest camera in my collection, so far.
I received it as a gift last year, it’s a “box camera” and is the second of this kind that I put my hands on.
Its peculiarity is in the front panel: an example of Art Déco that brings us back to the 30’s.

Si tratta di un esemplare costruito negli Stati Uniti intorno al 1930 dalla Eastman Kodak.
Il formato della pellicola è in questo caso il 116, per questo la versione 2A della fotocamera è leggermente più grande rispetto a quella per il 120.

This camera was built by Eastman Kodak around 1930 in the US.
It uses 116 film, that’s why this 2A version is slightly bigger than the 120 film camera version.

Nella parte frontale, oltre la lente posizionata al centro, sono visibili altri due tondi in alto a sinistra: sono i due mirini reflex a pozzetto.
Il principio è quello delle biottiche tipo Rolleiflex o Lubitel in cui l’immagine viene riflessa ad angolo retto grazie ad uno specchio inclinato a 45°. Ne abbiamo due, una per inquadrare in orizzontale, l’altra per il verticale. Purtroppo gli specchi si sono molto deteriorati e risulta praticamente impossibile utilizzarli per inquadrare (l’immagine si sarebbe dovuta comporre attraverso le due finestrelle rettangolari, una sopra l’altra sul lato sinistro).
Nella parte superiore si trova anche una comoda maniglia per portarla in giro quasi fosse una valigetta.

In the front side, beside the lens, you can see two little circles on the left: two little reflex viewfinders.
Like in Rolleiflex or Lubitel cameras, the image is reflected by a 45° mirror and displayed on a glass placed at 90°. There are two viewfinders, for horizontal and vertical framing, but the decay of the two internal mirrors has compromised the use of both of them.
On the top you’ll find a little handle to carry the camera around, as a suitcase.

Sul lato sinistro si nota la levetta di rilascio dell’otturatore, un “rotary disc shutter” o otturatore rotante, che ci lascia due opzioni di scatto: posa B o 1/30 di secondo. La leva per selezionare una di queste due modalità è in alto a destra (la più piccola) e quando è alzata innesca la posa B. L’altra leva più grande riguarda il valore per il diaframma, in base a quanto la estraiamo scegliamo tra f/11, f/16 e f/22.
Il fuoco è fisso e per far avanzare la pellicola c’è una specie di elica, in basso a sinistra.
Sul retro della fotocamera, l’unico segno è dato dalla finestrella rossa che indica le pose.

On the left side you can see the shutter release lever, the “rotary shutter” is able to open only for 1/30” or for a Bulb exposure. The lever we must use to select between these two modes is on the top of the camera, the smallest one, when it’s up it gives you the Bulb exposure.
There’s another lever on the top, the one who gives you the ability to choose between f/11, f/16 e f/22 diaphragm.
It’s a fixed focus camera and to advance film you have to rotate a sort of propeller placed on the lower part under the shutter release lever.
On the back of the camera you’ll only find the red window to check the film advance.

Arriviamo al dunque: l’ho usata solamente una volta e i risultati sono tutti qui sotto. Non avendo un rullino 116 ho pensato bene di metterci un 120, ma non è stata una mossa troppo furba. Il rocchetto del 120 essendo più corto non era fisso nell’alloggiamento, si disallineava e di conseguenza inceppava l’avanzamento. Per il prossimo test ho aumentato artigianalmente la larghezza di un rocchetto. Speriamo bene.

I used this camera only once, all the results are here in the next two frames. As you can see I had problems. The 120 film roll is shorter than the 116 so it goes out of place when you advance it, and the camera jammed.
Now I added some plastics to make the 120 roll fit the 116 space, time to test it again. Finger crossed.

La seconda vita di una LC-A

Nel novembre 2017 ero a San Pietroburgo e sono tornato al mercatino Удельная “Udelnaya”, uno posto splendido della periferia pietroburghese dove acquistare cose vissute.
Un venditore di fotocamere aveva buttato alla rinfusa in un cesto diverse fotocamere rotte a prezzo scontato, ho dato uno sguardo e ho deciso di acquistare questa ломо лк-а (Lomo LC-A) insieme ad una смена (Smena 35). Se non ricordo male ho pagato circa 240 rubli ogni fotocamera, vale a dire 3,5 € cad.

In November 2017 I was in Saint Petersburg and I went for the second time to Удельная “Udelnaya” market, a beautyful place in the suburbs where you can buy old stuff. A seller had, outside of his door, a basket full of old broken cameras at really low prices. I bought this ломо лк-а (Lomo LC-A) togheter with a смена (Smena 35) for only 240 rubles, if I remember well, something like 3,5€ each.

La Smena si è rivelata effettivamente inutilizzabile, la parte frontale con l’ottica e l’otturatore sono completamente andate, rimarrà sullo scaffale come cimelio. Il problema della LC-A è diverso: manca un gancio al coperchio sul retro che non si può quindi chiudere. Qui entra in gioco il nastro isolante che vedete nelle foto.
Dopo aver inserito le batterie, ho sigillato con il nastro il coperchio e ho scoperto di aver comprato una fotocamera perfettamente funzionante.
Il modello di produzione cinese commercializzato attualmente da Lomography può essere acquistato a partire da circa 250€.

The Smena is unusable, the lens/shutter group is damaged, so it will rest on the shelf as a souvenir. The LC-A issue is different: the clasp is missing on the film door so it’s impossible to close the back. That’s why you see electrical tape decorating the camera in the photos.
After placing the batteries and sealing the door with tape, I realized that I had in my hands a full working camera.

La storia di questa fotocamera si intreccia con quella del marchio austriaco, ne avevo parlato qui. Per non ripetermi mi limiterò a dire che la versione che vedete in queste foto dovrebbe risalire al 1988, è stata prodotta nello stabilimento Lomo di San Pietroburgo e il suo acronimo per esteso è Ломо Компакт-А ossia “Lomo Kompact-A”. Si tratta di una copia, ben riuscita a mio parere, della “Cosina CX”.
Stiamo parlando di una 35mm dalle dimensioni ridottissime, è veramente comoda da portare in giro e ha una lente Minitar grandangolare da 32 mm con apertura massima da f2,8.
Funziona in priorità di diaframma, non è possibile selezionare i tempi ma si può scegliere tra un intervallo f2,8 / f16 e A di “Automatico” (foto 4).
La messa a fuoco è a stima e la levetta può selezionare da 0,8 mt a infinito con i passi intermedi di 1,5 mt e 3 mt (foto 5) .

I already wrote about the history of this camera here, and about why it’s tied to the austrian brand. I don’t want to repeat myself so I will talk only about the camera. This should be a 1988 version made in Saint Petersburg Lomo factory. The acronym stands for “Ломо Компакт-А”,
translitterated “Lomo Kompact-A”. The camera is a copy of the “Cosina CX”, a good one in my opinion.
It’s a really small 35mm camera and it seems designed to be carried around everyday. It has a wide Minitar 32 mm lens with a maximum aperture of f2,8.
It works with aperture priority so it’s not possible to set the shutter speed, however you can choose in the range of f2,8 / f16 and A for “automatic” (photo n° 4). The camera works on scale focusing, there’s a lever with which you can choose 0,8 mt, 1,5 mt, 3 mt or infinity (photo n° 5).

Le leve del diaframma e della messa a fuoco si trovano ai lati della lente, a sinistra del mirino galileano c’è una rotella per la selezione della sensibilità della pellicola. Non in ISO o ASA ma in GOST.
Sulla parte superiore si trova l’alloggio per il flash, la leva per riavvolgere la pellicola, il pulsante di scatto e la finestra del contapose. Nella parte inferiore invece troviamo il pulsante per il riavvolgimento e il meccanismo per aprire le tendine della lente e del mirino (foto 1- 2). Aprendo o chiudendo il meccanismo in questo modello notiamo la chicca: la scritta a scomparsa “made in USSR” (foto 6).

Focus and aperture levers are on either sides of the lens, up on the left side near the sport viewfinder there’s the small GOST selector (the soviet equivalent fot ASA or ISO). On the top we find the hot shoe, the rewind knob, the shutter release button and the little window for the frame counter. The bottom of the camera accomodates the release button to rewind the film and a little slider that opens and closes lens and viewfinder (photos 1-2). When you do it, on this model, you can find a little treat: “made in USSR” text appears and disappears in front of the lens

Risolto il problema del coperchio ho iniziato a scattare. Questa fotocamera è comodissima, leggera e silenziosa, le immagini che produce hanno quel gradevole decadimento agli angoli, o vignettatura, e colori saturi. L’esposimetro interno che gestisce la priorità di diaframmi è abbastanza affidabile (nel mio caso) e rende ancora più rapido il processo di scatto.
In conclusione sono stato decisamente fortunato e ho potuto scoprire così una fotocamera divertente, da portare a spasso, discreta, con una predisposizione naturale per la street photography.

As soon as I solved the film door problem I started shooting. This camera is lightweight, comfortable and quiet, it gives to the image the lovely light decay on the corners, the so-called vignette, and saturated colors.
The internal exposimeter is reliable and manages well the shutter in my opinion. This speeds up all the shooting process.
At the end I was very lucky to discover this fun, portable, discreet camera almost for free and it’s perfect for street photography.
