Un’altra tappa importante nella mia collezione è stato il raggiungimento di questo pezzo (abbastanza) raro.
Ho ricordi nitidi di me da piccolo, a casa di mia nonna materna, con un affare di plastica davanti agli occhi e l’indice destro che faceva scattare una levetta in maniera meccanica.
Ero girato verso la finestra per avere più luce contro, guardavo immagini dalle cascate del Niagara, forse anche dal monte Rushmore ma non ne sono sicuro.
I luoghi erano tridimensionali ed avevano colori che solo le diapositive invecchiate possono avere.
Ogni volta che mia nonna tirava fuori il View-Master ero contentissimo.

This has been another milestone in my collection, a quite rare piece.
I still have memories of my childhood, in my grandmother’s house, when I used to play with a plastic item in front of my eyes. My right index finger was pushing up and down a lever mechanically, a windows was in front of me because I nedded light.
I saw the Niagara falls, maybe also the Mount Rushmore but I’m not really sure.
Every place was in 3-d and had colors that only aged positive film can have.
Everytime my grandmother gave to me her View-Master I got really excited.
Sono passati parecchi anni e la mia fascinazione per quel sistema non si è mai affievolita. Anzi, oggi sono il felice possessore di una View-Master Personal Camera, un View-Master Cutter, un View-Master Projector e, ovviamente, un visore View-Master.
Tutto questo fu ideato intorno agli anni ’30 da William Gruber negli Stati Uniti come mezzo di intrattenimento per famiglie. Acquistando i dischetti di cartone, i “reel”, si potevano ammirare i parchi nazionali e i monumenti del paese rimanendo letteralmente sulla poltrona del salotto.
Erede del sistema Tru-Vue, ha avuto il merito di ri-adattare la fotografia stereoscopica tanto di moda nel 19esimo secolo alle masse del 20esimo.

It’s been a while since these days but my unconditional love to that system never ended.
Today I’m the proud owner of a View-Master Personal Camera, a View-Master Cutter. a View-Master Projector and a View-Master Viewer of course.
William Gruber created this back in the ’30s in the US as an entertainment tool for the american family. Buying a “reel” you could watch national parks and monuments literally without leaving your home.
The View-Master system came after the True-Vue and the big point was that brought back stereoscopic photography for the 20th century people.
Inizialmente furono commercializzati solamente il Viewer e i dischetti, in un secondo tempo arrivarono anche le fotocamere e i proiettori. Nel 1939 fu presentato il primo View-Master model A, wikipedia parla anche di utilizzi a scopo militare e scientifico / divulgativo di alcuni esemplari negli anni successivi.
Dal 1952 la Sawyer’s inizia a commercializzare la Personal Stereo Camera e altri meravigliosi attrezzi per creare dischi personalizzati.

In the early years Sawyer’s put on the market only Viewer’s and reels, decades later was the time for cameras and projectors.
View-Master model A was uncovered in 1939, according to wikipedia it was also used for military and scientific purposes in the following years.
In 1952 Sawyer’s brought to life the Personal Stereo Camera and other tools to produce reels at home.
La fotocamera ha 2 obiettivi 25 mm tra loro distanti circa 3 cm ed è proprio questa la caratteristica che grazie all’effetto di parallasse la rende stereo. In pratica ogni obiettivo scatta una foto da una angolazione leggermente differente rispetto all’altro.
In un secondo tempo, quando il nostro cervello sarà costretto a vedere con ogni occhio una immagine sola, in base alle piccole differenze ricorstruirà la tridimensionalità.

The camera has 2 optic groups, the distance between them is approximately 3 cm, and this is the feature that makes it “stereo” (yes I’m talking about parallax) .
Each lens captures a photo slightly different from the other one.
When your brain will be forced to see a single separate image with every eye it will reconstruct the 3-d effect because of these little differences.
Il design di questo apparecchio è stupendo, a me ricorda un po’ lo Stramlining anche se un po’ tardivo cronologicamente. Ha due ruote giganti sulla parte superiore, ovviamente una per il diaframma (da f3,5 a f16) e l’altra per il tempo di posa (1/100 – 1/10 + B). Tra queste due ce n’è una terza che, secondo il sistema “Expo-sure”, indica l’esposizione migliore a seconda delle condizioni meteo. A destra c’è la ruota di avanzamento pellicola, che tiene anche il conto delle pose.

I love how this camera has been designed and it remainds me of Streamlining design, even if they’re not contemporary.
Two big wheels on the top of the camera are for aperture (f 3,5 to f 16) and shutter speed (1/100 – 1/10 + B exposure). Above these wheels there’s another one which helps you choice the right exposure and it’s called “Expo-Sure”, brilliant.
On your right you can see the winding knob wich is also a counter for our photos.
La particolarità tecnica più curiosa di questa fotocamera è che, date le dimensioni minime necessarie per produrre la diapositiva per il “dischetto”, può imprimere 69 coppie di immagini su una pellicola 35mm da 36 pose classica. Questo perché in un primo tempo usa solo la parte inferiore della pellicola, quando si arriva a fine rullino si gira il selettore che si trova tra le due lenti e la fotocamera inizia a scattare sulla parte superiore del negativo andando a ritroso.

One incredible feature of this camera is that it can shoot 69 couples of photos with a 36 exposures standard roll. If you see how small the photos are on a View-Master reel, you can understand how it reaches that number.
When you start shooting the camera uses the lower part of the film, when you reach the end of it you have to switch a selector (you can find it on the front of the camera in the middle) from “A” to “B” and the camera goes backwards using the upper part of the film.
Il pulsante di scatto è nella parte frontale, a destra, mentre il mirino galileano è ovviamente al centro della camera ed ha una bolla che indica il piano. Le lenti hanno dei paraluce filettati su cui possono essere montati eventuali filtri.
Sono molto fortunato perché il mio esemplare è in ottime condizioni, con tanto di scatola originale Sawyer’s: made in Portland, Oregon.

The shutter button is on the front of the camera, on the right side; the viewfinder (galilean) is right in the middle of the body and has a bubble in it to get perfectly horizontal shots. Every lens has threaded little hoods where you can attach filters.
I feel lucky because my camera is in really good shape and has its original Sawyer’s box: made in Portland, Oregon.
